Education and Learning Contexts
- Education — the organized development of knowledge, skill, judgment, identity, and participation through teaching, study, practice, and experience.
- Learning — a durable change in knowledge, capability, strategy, or disposition produced by experience. Short-term performance during practice is not always evidence of lasting learning.
- Formal education — structured learning delivered through recognized institutions, curricula, and credentials, such as schools, colleges, and licensed training programs.
- Nonformal education — organized learning outside the main credential system, such as museum programs, community workshops, workplace courses, and youth organizations.
- Informal learning — learning embedded in everyday activity, observation, conversation, media, play, work, and participation in communities.
- Pedagogy — the theory and practice of teaching, including decisions about goals, relationships, content, instruction, assessment, and learning environments.
- Andragogy — a tradition focused on adult learning and the experience, purposes, autonomy, and constraints adults bring to education. Adult learners still vary, so no single method follows from age alone.
- Socialization — the process through which people learn the norms, practices, roles, and identities of a group. Education transmits culture while also creating settings in which culture is questioned and changed.
- Learning environment — the physical, social, cultural, digital, and institutional conditions in which learning occurs. Safety, belonging, expectations, resources, and opportunities to participate all matter.
- Opportunity to learn — whether learners actually receive access to the content, instruction, time, materials, and support on which they are assessed.
Traditions and Purposes of Education
- Liberal education — develops broad intellectual capacities through study across fields rather than preparation for one occupation alone.
- Vocational education — prepares learners for skilled work through technical knowledge, practice, workplace experience, and recognized qualifications.
- Progressive education — a broad tradition associated with learning through inquiry, experience, democratic participation, and connection to social life rather than recitation alone.
- Behaviorism — explains learning through changes in observable behavior shaped by consequences and environmental cues. Reinforcement can support practice but does not fully describe understanding or agency.
- Cognitivism — studies internal processes such as attention, memory, representation, problem solving, and metacognition that mediate learning.
- Constructivism — emphasizes that learners interpret new information through prior knowledge and actively build or revise mental models. It does not imply that all guidance should be removed.
- Social constructivism — emphasizes learning through language, participation, tools, culture, and interaction with more knowledgeable peers or adults.
- Experiential education — organizes learning around purposeful experience combined with reflection, conceptualization, and application. Experience without structured interpretation can reinforce error.
- Critical pedagogy — examines how education relates to power, voice, inequality, and social transformation, treating learners as participants in inquiry rather than passive recipients.
- Montessori education — uses prepared environments, sequenced materials, mixed-age settings, and extended self-directed work within a defined pedagogical system.
- Democratic education — gives learners meaningful participation in community decisions and treats deliberation, shared responsibility, and civic agency as educational aims.
- Human-capital theory — analyzes education as investment in skills that can increase productivity and earnings. Education also has civic, cultural, relational, and intrinsic purposes not captured by earnings.
- Credentialism — the use of degrees or certificates as signals and access requirements, sometimes beyond the specific skills a role needs.
- Hidden curriculum — implicit lessons conveyed by routines, authority, grouping, discipline, and institutional expectations in addition to the stated curriculum.
Cognition, Memory, and Expertise
- Attention — selective allocation of limited processing resources. Novelty can capture attention, but learning also requires sustaining and directing it toward relevant information.
- Working memory — the limited-capacity system used to hold and manipulate information during a task. Prior knowledge reduces demand by grouping elements into meaningful structures.
- Long-term memory — durable storage of knowledge, skills, experiences, and associations. Retrieval reconstructs access to stored information and can be influenced by context.
- Schema — an organized knowledge structure that helps interpret, compress, and predict information. Incorrect schemas can also produce systematic misunderstanding.
- Encoding — processes that establish a memory representation. Meaningful connection, elaboration, imagery, organization, and retrieval can strengthen later access.
- Retrieval practice — attempting to recall information strengthens later retention and reveals gaps more effectively than repeated exposure alone.
- Spacing effect — distributing study over time generally supports longer retention than massing the same practice in one session.
- Interleaving — mixing related problem types or topics can improve discrimination and strategy selection, even when blocked practice feels easier.
- Elaboration — explaining how and why ideas connect to prior knowledge. Productive elaboration must remain accurate rather than adding memorable misinformation.
- Dual coding — coordinating verbal and visual representations can support understanding when both carry relevant information. Decorative visuals can instead add distraction.
- Cognitive load — demand placed on limited working-memory resources. Instruction can manage task complexity, reduce irrelevant demands, and support construction of useful knowledge structures.
- Chunking — grouping elements into meaningful units. What counts as one chunk depends on the learner’s existing knowledge.
- Automaticity — fast, low-effort execution developed through accurate practice. It frees attention for more complex reasoning but can also entrench a flawed routine.
- Transfer — use of learning in a new task or context. Transfer is more likely when learners understand underlying structure, compare cases, and practice selecting knowledge rather than merely repeating one format.
- Misconception — a coherent but inaccurate model that can survive exposure to correct facts. Effective correction elicits the existing model, creates a reason to revise it, and supplies a usable alternative.
- Metacognition — monitoring and regulating one’s own understanding, strategy, effort, and progress. Learners often misjudge fluency as mastery.
- Expertise — organized, domain-specific knowledge that supports pattern recognition and efficient problem solving. General intelligence or years of experience alone do not guarantee expert performance.
- Deliberate practice — focused work on specific weaknesses with appropriate difficulty, feedback, and repeated refinement. Its feasibility and contribution vary by domain and context.
Motivation, Identity, and Social Learning
- Intrinsic motivation — engagement for interest, enjoyment, or inherent satisfaction. It can coexist with external goals and requirements.
- Extrinsic motivation — engagement shaped by outcomes such as grades, credentials, praise, pay, or avoidance of penalty. External incentives can help or hinder depending on design and interpretation.
- Self-efficacy — belief about one’s capability to perform a particular task. It affects persistence and strategy but should be calibrated through real feedback and experience.
- Expectancy-value model — motivation reflects both expectation of success and the value, utility, identity relevance, and cost attached to a task.
- Autonomy, competence, and relatedness — needs emphasized by self-determination theory. Learning settings can support them through meaningful choice, attainable challenge, informative feedback, and respectful connection.
- Mastery goal — focus on developing competence and understanding; a performance goal focuses on demonstrating competence relative to a standard or others.
- Growth mindset — the belief that abilities can develop can influence response to difficulty, but a slogan alone does not overcome poor instruction, scarce resources, or structural barriers.
- Belonging — perception of being accepted and able to participate as a legitimate member of a learning community. Belonging is shaped by relationships, representation, norms, and institutional signals.
- Identity and learning — learners interpret participation through who they are, who others think they are, and who they may become. Identity is socially situated and changes across settings.
- Peer learning — learners explain, question, model, and give feedback to one another. It works best with clear tasks, accountability, and norms that prevent unequal participation.
- Observational learning — acquisition through watching models and the consequences of their actions. Attention, perceived similarity, goals, and opportunity to practice shape the result.
- Emotion and learning — emotion influences attention, memory, motivation, and judgment. Moderate challenge can support engagement, while threat and chronic stress can narrow participation and cognitive resources.
- Stereotype threat — concern about confirming a negative group stereotype can affect performance in some contexts. Effects vary, and structural inequity cannot be reduced to one psychological mechanism.
- Academic self-concept — a learner’s perception of competence in a domain, shaped by experience, feedback, social comparison, and group context.
Curriculum and Instruction
- Curriculum — an organized account of intended learning, content, sequence, experiences, materials, and assessment. The enacted curriculum may differ from the written one.
- Learning objective — a specific statement of what learners should know or be able to do. It should guide instruction and be assessable at the intended level of complexity.
- Scope and sequence — defines what content is included and the order in which it is introduced and revisited.
- Prerequisite knowledge — knowledge or skill needed to benefit from new instruction. Diagnosing prerequisites prevents treating missing opportunity as lack of ability.
- Backward design — begins with learning goals and acceptable evidence, then plans instruction and activities that prepare learners to produce that evidence.
- Alignment — coherence among goals, instruction, practice, and assessment. Alignment can improve validity without requiring every activity to mirror the test format.
- Scaffolding — temporary support that makes a task accessible while preserving its intellectual goal, with support adjusted and removed as capability grows.
- Worked example — a modeled solution that makes steps and reasoning visible. Comparing examples and gradually removing steps can prepare novices for independent problem solving.
- Explicit instruction — clear modeling, guided practice, checks for understanding, and independent practice. It can include active reasoning and discussion rather than passive lecture alone.
- Inquiry-based learning — learners investigate questions using evidence and disciplinary practices. The amount of guidance should match prior knowledge, task complexity, and instructional goals.
- Problem-based learning — organizes learning around a complex problem that drives research, collaboration, and application of knowledge.
- Project-based learning — develops knowledge and skills through an extended project that produces a concrete product, performance, or explanation.
- Collaborative learning — structures joint work around shared goals and productive interdependence. Simply placing learners in groups does not ensure collaboration.
- Discussion-based teaching — uses questions, claims, evidence, and responses to develop reasoning. Participation structures influence whose ideas are heard and examined.
- Differentiation — adjusts pathways, supports, materials, pacing, or products in response to learner readiness and needs while maintaining meaningful goals.
- Universal Design for Learning — plans multiple ways to engage, represent information, and act or express learning so predictable barriers are reduced from the outset.
- Culturally responsive teaching — connects academic learning to learners’ cultural knowledge and experiences while maintaining intellectual demand and examining bias in content and institutions.
- Culturally sustaining pedagogy — seeks to sustain plural linguistic and cultural practices rather than treating assimilation to a dominant norm as the sole outcome.
- Feedback — information that helps close the gap between current and intended performance. It is most useful when specific, timely, actionable, and followed by an opportunity to revise.
- Learning styles — preferences people report for ways of receiving information. Evidence does not support assigning instruction to fixed visual, auditory, or kinesthetic types to improve learning.
Literacy, Language, Mathematics, and Science Learning
- Phonological awareness — awareness of sound structures in spoken language, including words, syllables, onsets, rimes, and phonemes.
- Phonemic awareness — the ability to identify and manipulate individual speech sounds. It is a subset of phonological awareness and does not require print.
- Phonics — instruction in systematic relations between written symbols and speech sounds for decoding and spelling.
- Reading fluency — accurate, appropriately paced, and expressive reading that supports comprehension without consuming excessive attention in word recognition.
- Vocabulary — knowledge of word meanings, relations, and uses. It develops through direct instruction, conversation, reading, morphology, and disciplinary study.
- Reading comprehension — construction of meaning through interaction among text, language, knowledge, inference, strategy, purpose, and context.
- Disciplinary literacy — the specialized ways fields read, write, represent, argue, and evaluate evidence.
- Writing process — planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing as recursive activities. Explicit strategy instruction and feedback can support each stage.
- Multilingualism — use of more than one language as a cognitive, cultural, and communicative resource. Proficiency can differ by language, domain, modality, and setting.
- Conceptual knowledge — understanding principles, relations, and reasons; procedural knowledge concerns how to carry out actions. Strong mathematics learning develops connections between them.
- Mathematical representation — expression of ideas with symbols, diagrams, tables, graphs, language, objects, or movement. Translating among representations exposes structure and misunderstanding.
- Number sense — flexible understanding of quantities, magnitudes, operations, and numerical relationships rather than memorized procedures alone.
- Productive struggle — sustained effort on an attainable challenge with support that preserves thinking. Unstructured frustration without access or feedback is not productive.
- Scientific practice — includes asking questions, modeling, investigating, analyzing data, constructing explanations, arguing from evidence, and communicating information.
- Nature of science — scientific knowledge is evidence-based, revisable, theory-laden, socially scrutinized, and constrained by methods. Revisability does not make all claims equally uncertain.
- Engineering education — integrates defining problems, specifying criteria and constraints, designing alternatives, testing, and optimization with science and mathematics.
Assessment and Measurement
- Assessment — systematic collection and interpretation of evidence about learning for a stated purpose.
- Formative assessment — evidence used during learning to decide what learners and teachers should do next. An assignment is formative only when its information changes subsequent action.
- Summative assessment — judgment of achievement at the end of a course, unit, or period for reporting, grading, certification, or selection.
- Diagnostic assessment — identifies prior knowledge, misconceptions, strengths, and needs before or during instruction.
- Validity — the degree to which evidence and theory support the intended interpretation and use of assessment scores. An assessment is not simply valid in the abstract.
- Reliability — consistency of scores across relevant sources of variation, such as occasions, raters, forms, or items. High reliability does not establish validity.
- Fairness — requires that score interpretations and uses are comparably valid and accessible across relevant groups, with construct-irrelevant barriers examined.
- Measurement error — difference between an observed score and the value implied by the measurement model. Reported precision should reflect this uncertainty.
- Criterion-referenced interpretation — compares performance with defined knowledge or skill standards.
- Norm-referenced interpretation — compares performance with a specified reference group. The result depends on who is in that group and when norms were established.
- Selected-response item — asks learners to choose among provided options. Well-designed items can test more than recall, but guessing and cueing affect interpretation.
- Constructed-response item — requires learners to generate an answer, explanation, performance, or product. Scoring requires explicit criteria and adequate rater consistency.
- Rubric — describes criteria and performance levels for evaluating work. Analytic rubrics score dimensions separately; holistic rubrics make an overall judgment.
- Portfolio assessment — evaluates a curated body of work over time. Selection rules and scoring standards are needed for comparable interpretation.
- Authentic assessment — elicits application in a task resembling valued practice outside the test. Realism alone does not guarantee validity or fairness.
- Item difficulty — proportion answering an item correctly in classical test theory. It is a property of the item in a particular tested population, not an intrinsic constant.
- Item discrimination — extent to which responses distinguish learners with differing performance on the measured construct. Negative discrimination can reveal a flawed key or multidimensional item.
- Standard setting — a judgment-based process for selecting score thresholds that represent performance categories. A cut score is not discovered as a natural fact.
- Accommodation — changes access conditions without intending to change the construct measured; a modification changes the task, standard, or construct expectation.
- Grade — a compressed judgment that may combine achievement, growth, completion, participation, and behavior. Clear grading rules are needed because these components answer different questions.
Education Research and Evidence
- Research question — a precise statement of what will be described, compared, explained, or estimated for which population and context.
- Theory of change — an explicit account of how an educational activity is expected to produce intermediate and final outcomes under stated conditions.
- Randomized controlled trial — assigns units by chance to estimate an intervention effect under its design and assumptions. Randomization supports internal validity but does not ensure representativeness or successful implementation.
- Cluster-randomized trial — randomizes intact groups such as classrooms or schools. Analysis must account for correlation among learners within clusters.
- Quasi-experiment — estimates causal effects without random assignment using design features such as discontinuities, comparison trends, matching, or natural variation and their corresponding assumptions.
- Observational study — measures exposures and outcomes without assigned intervention. It can describe patterns and associations, while causal interpretation requires stronger assumptions and design.
- Qualitative research — investigates meaning, practice, experience, and process through methods such as interviews, observations, documents, and fieldwork.
- Mixed-methods research — integrates quantitative and qualitative evidence so each addresses a defined part of the question and the findings inform one another.
- Implementation fidelity — degree to which an intervention’s essential components were delivered as intended. Adaptation can be productive, so fidelity should distinguish core functions from flexible form.
- Implementation science — studies how interventions are adopted, delivered, adapted, sustained, and scaled within real organizations and systems.
- Internal validity — credibility of the causal conclusion for the studied sample and setting, given threats such as confounding, attrition, contamination, and measurement bias.
- External validity — support for applying a finding across populations, settings, outcomes, or time. It requires evidence about variation and context rather than sample size alone.
- Effect size — expresses the magnitude of a difference or relationship. Practical meaning depends on the outcome scale, baseline risk, comparison, cost, and uncertainty.
- Pre-registration — records questions, outcomes, and analysis decisions before results are known, helping distinguish confirmatory tests from later exploration.
- Replication — repeats or closely tests a study to evaluate whether a finding recurs. Conceptual replication tests the underlying claim with different operational choices.
- Systematic review — uses explicit methods to identify, appraise, and synthesize all eligible evidence for a focused question.
- Meta-analysis — statistically combines effect estimates while examining heterogeneity, study quality, and possible reporting bias. A precise pooled estimate can still summarize weak or incomparable evidence.
- What Works Clearinghouse — an Institute of Education Sciences program that reviews education studies against published design standards and summarizes evidence about interventions.
- Research-practice partnership — sustained collaboration in which researchers and practitioners jointly define problems, interpret evidence, and design usable studies.
- Open science — practices such as transparent protocols, materials, code, data governance, reporting, and replication that make evidence easier to inspect and reuse.
Education Systems and Policy
- Early childhood education — organized learning and care before primary schooling, spanning cognitive, linguistic, physical, social, and emotional development.
- Primary education — foundational schooling that develops literacy, numeracy, knowledge, social participation, and preparation for further study.
- Secondary education — schooling after the primary level, often combining general education, subject specialization, and vocational pathways.
- Tertiary education — postsecondary study including universities, colleges, technical institutes, and advanced professional programs.
- International Standard Classification of Education — UNESCO’s framework for comparing education programs and attainment levels across national systems.
- Compulsory education — legally required participation in education over specified ages or stages, with rules varying by jurisdiction.
- School governance — allocation of authority among governments, boards, leaders, educators, families, communities, and other institutions.
- Education finance — collection and allocation of resources for personnel, facilities, services, materials, and student support. Equal spending and equitable provision are different standards.
- Accountability system — uses goals, measures, reporting, incentives, or intervention to influence institutional performance. Measures can redirect behavior, including toward unintended targets.
- School choice — policies that allow attendance outside a default assigned school through options such as open enrollment, charter schools, vouchers, or private education, with effects dependent on design and context.
- Tracking and ability grouping — assignment to different courses or instructional groups based on perceived readiness or performance. These arrangements can target instruction but can also amplify biased placement and unequal opportunity.
- Vocational and technical pathway — combines occupational preparation with academic knowledge, workplace learning, and credentials linked to further education or employment.
- Apprenticeship — paid or structured work-based learning under skilled supervision, usually paired with related instruction and a recognized occupational pathway.
- Higher-education accreditation — external quality review of institutions or programs against stated standards. Accreditation provides assurance processes, not a ranking of individual learning.
- Credential — a documented qualification such as a degree, certificate, license, badge, or apprenticeship completion. Its value depends on standards, recognition, and what it validly signals.
- Adult education — literacy, foundational, vocational, civic, professional, or personal learning undertaken after initial schooling.
- Lifelong learning — continued development across the life course through formal, nonformal, and informal settings.
Equity, Inclusion, and Access
- Educational equity — allocation of opportunities, resources, and support so outcomes are not predictably constrained by unjust social conditions. It requires examining barriers rather than assuming identical treatment is sufficient.
- Educational equality — equal provision or treatment under a specified rule. Equal inputs can remain inequitable when learners face different barriers or needs.
- Inclusion — meaningful membership, access, participation, and learning within a shared community, with supports designed around individual and collective needs.
- Accessibility — design of environments, materials, communication, and technology so people with disabilities can perceive, navigate, understand, and participate.
- Special education — specially designed instruction and related services for eligible learners with disabilities under applicable law and individualized planning.
- Individualized education program — in the United States, a legally defined written plan describing an eligible student’s present performance, goals, services, accommodations, and evaluation.
- Least restrictive environment — in United States special-education law, education with nondisabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate, with removal justified by individual need rather than disability label alone.
- Assistive technology — devices, software, and services that improve access, communication, mobility, independence, or learning.
- Multilingual learner — a learner developing academic participation across more than one language. Home-language knowledge can support additional-language learning and subject understanding.
- Digital divide — unequal access to devices, connectivity, accessible platforms, technical support, privacy, and the skills needed to use them effectively.
- Disproportionality — group differences in access, placement, discipline, identification, or outcomes that require investigation of opportunity, bias, policy, and context rather than automatic causal conclusions.
- Funds of knowledge — historically accumulated knowledge and practices within households and communities that can serve as resources for instruction.
- Trauma-informed education — seeks safety, predictability, agency, connection, and referral pathways while avoiding assumptions that educators can diagnose trauma from behavior alone.
- Restorative practice — approaches conflict and harm through accountability, repair, relationships, and reintegration. Implementation quality and power differences shape whether it is meaningful.
- Inclusive curriculum — represents diverse people and knowledge accurately, examines how canons were formed, and gives learners substantive intellectual access rather than token inclusion.
Teachers, Communities, and Professional Learning
- Content knowledge — command of the subject being taught, including its concepts, evidence, methods, and structure.
- Pedagogical content knowledge — knowledge of how particular ideas are understood, represented, misunderstood, and taught to specific learners.
- Classroom management — design of routines, relationships, expectations, space, time, and responses that support safe and productive participation.
- Teacher noticing — disciplined attention to learners’ ideas, strategies, participation, and needs, followed by evidence-based interpretation and response.
- Reflective practice — systematic examination of decisions and evidence to improve teaching. Reflection becomes stronger when tied to concrete artifacts and alternative explanations.
- Instructional coaching — job-embedded professional learning through observation, modeling, feedback, goal setting, and repeated practice.
- Professional learning community — educators who regularly examine evidence, plan, test practices, and share responsibility for learner outcomes.
- Teacher induction — structured support for early-career educators through mentoring, reduced isolation, feedback, and development of professional judgment.
- Family engagement — reciprocal partnership in which families and educators share information, decisions, and responsibility while respecting language, knowledge, and constraints.
- Community-based learning — connects study with local organizations, problems, histories, and expertise through reciprocal relationships rather than treating communities as sites for extraction.
- Museum education — object-, place-, and inquiry-based learning in museums and cultural institutions, often linking observation, interpretation, dialogue, and public history.
- Informal science education — science learning through museums, media, clubs, citizen science, public programs, and everyday activity beyond the formal classroom.
- Safeguarding — policies and practices that protect children and vulnerable people from abuse, exploitation, harassment, and preventable harm, including clear reporting responsibilities.
- Professional ethics in education — obligations concerning learner welfare, fairness, confidentiality, competence, boundaries, honest assessment, and responsible use of authority.
